Happy Friday from San Ignacio, Belize. Where you might say? San Ignacio. We've made a minor (well, major) change in location and here's the story behind it.
The turning point was at dinner last night on the island. The food has been good, but the selection is minimal (read as nothing) especially for Allysha. The island is small, and there has been minimal stuff to do. Thinking of staying another 3 full days on the island wasn't too excited for either of us, so we set the wheels in motion. I asked the manager about switching our flight from Monday to Saturday, so we could head back to Belize City two days early. Concerned about us staying in Belize City, he suggested that we stay near the Mayan Ruins we were scheduled to visit today (Friday). He suggested a couple of hotels in San Ignacio and one thing led to another and here we are.
Both of us agree the tiny island was nice, and fun, but were are very much excited to be back in a city with shops, places to eat and things to explore. We spent some time this afternoon in the farmer's market collecting food for dinner. Mmmmmmm.
So, I'll step back and talk about our trip here. We left the island about 8:00 am this morning with all our luggage in tow. During breakfast we saw a couple dolphins thanks to a lady screaming "dolphins, 12:00" which had all of us looking in different directions. We then took the boat ride into the mainland, during which we saw a wild alligator along the riverbed.
We then took a two and one half hour long van ride to the Xunantunich Ruins, on the border between Guatemala and Belize. The ruins were very interesting, and we toured them for about an hour and a half. We got to see Howler Monkeys in the trees, and climb to the top of the tallest ruin which was about 130 feet tall. This makes it the second tallest building in Belize. After the tour, we had lunch at a local restaurant. Our tour then dropped us off at a hastily booked hotel in the city.
The hotel is pretty nice (the nicer ones were booked), but when we checked in, the office gal said the woman I spoke with last night made a mistake and no cabanas were available. So, she put us up in a two bedroom house, kitchen and all. We'll be here through tonight for sure, but may move to a different hotel tomorrow (or stay here).
Upon arriving, we went for a dip in the pool and happened to run into someone who recognized me (and my WSU tattoo) from a day drive trip they took at Coco Plum Caye on Tuesday. How funny is that, 2 1/2 hours away and we run into someone we'd seen before.
I'll end that we're resting in our "living room" (don't get any wild visions, this house was built in 1980 and never changed a bit) and very much enjoying our new surroundings. The island was nice and relaxing, but we were ready to see so much more of Belize. Here we come!
